In the realm where quality meets value, the Aquasonic Black Series excels on both fronts, consistently impressing us throughout our series of tests. From cleaning performance to ease of use, we found much to appreciate and little to criticize. The inclusion of eight extra brush heads sets it apart from many other offerings, and the overall comfort of the brushing experience was particularly enjoyable.

Performance Comparison

Cleaning

The most crucial test, consisting of 40% of the total score, is the cleaning assessment. This aspect is, after all, the primary reason many opt for an electric toothbrush over a manual one. To evaluate this, we conducted a series of tests. Initially, our testers chewed a plaque tablet, which illuminated any remnants of plaque in a pink tone. Capturing both before and after photos allowed for a direct comparison. However, before unveiling the results, we prompted our testers to share how clean their teeth felt after adhering to a dentist-recommended 2-minute brushing method. Once this step concluded, we meticulously analyzed the results. Additionally, we employed a dental model to assess overall cleaning efficiency. We applied a messy mixture of coffee grounds and pesto over the artificial teeth and set a timer for 1 minute, during which we actively brushed away the concoction.

The Aquasonic Black Series started off pretty strong. The brush head was able to navigate tough spots and provide a clean feeling. We found it removed most of the plaque as well. However, we felt that a few more seconds would have gone a long way. As far as the dental model goes, the brush successfully removed all the debris. It's difficult to fault this device here, which is great news for anyone prioritizing cleaning above all else.

Comfort

Coming a close second to cleaning, comfort plays a big role in allowing you to effortlessly adhere to your oral hygiene routine without pause. This makes up 30% of the overall score. We certainly got our answers, and the results were mostly pleasing. The small brush head proved gentle on the gums, and the vibrations from the motor weren't too jarring, combining to create a pleasant brushing experience. Moreover, the soft mode offers a less aggressive alternative, particularly useful for those with gums prone to bleeding. The handle is smooth but features indentations on the back for increased grip. Unfortunately, this particular model lacks a pressure sensor, a feature we consider highly functional. The overall motorized noise level fell within a decent range of 53 to 68 decibels, tested with a decibel reader from 3 inches and 6 feet away.

Additionally, the power and secondary buttons are flush, contributing to the brush's cleanliness over extended periods, requiring minimal maintenance. When it comes time to clean it, rest assured it won't take on any water thanks to the IBX7 water-resistant rating.

This model includes a nifty case that provides storage for two extra brush heads, making it especially useful for travel. With a total of eight brush heads included, you'll have plenty of spares on hand. Additionally, it features a two-minute timer, briefly turning off to signal the need to switch quadrants and automatically shutting off at the end of the cycle.

Battery Life

These test results are determined by using each brush for a total of four minutes, which is typical usage. If you use your toothbrush for longer than that, you'll need to decide what is optimal for you in terms of overall battery life.

Sporting a lithium-ion battery and a charger, the Aquasonic Black Series managed to last 31 days. While not leading the pack in this test, it's still more than adequate for typical usage. A single overnight charge will get you nearly a full battery. Keep an eye on the green indicator light, which signals a full battery, turning red if it needs some juice. For those not traveling extensively without the charger, 31 days should be sufficient. However, power users seeking the best battery life might find this to be a slight letdown.

Should You Buy the Aquasonic Black Series?

We found that this model from Aquasonic proved it could handle cleaning with comfort and efficiency, making it a strong consideration. However, ensure you don't require extended battery life and be aware of the absence of a pressure sensor, which could lead to overbrushing, especially if you have sensitive gums. All-in-all, we didn't find much to gripe about with this model.
